Profiles in Asian Theology. Vol. 1: India
This book is about Indian theology. Legend tells that the history of Christianity in India goes back to the time of the first century when the Apostle Thomas landed in India, and the church of Thomas in Chennai today is claimed to be testimony of it. It is certainly dubious whether the history of the church of India can go that early, but it is certain, however, that Christian missionary activities were extremely active in India already in the 5th century. The existence of the Syrian Orthodox Church in India illustrates its origin early in relation to the Nestorians. Thus, it is more than a thousand years before the Protestants appeared in the land of India.
This book, written by Dr. Peter Lee and Dr. Muehlhaus, introduces the reader to the important Indian thinkers and their theologies, the encounter between Hindu and Christian thoughts. Both Dr. Lee and Dr. Muehlhaus are brilliant theologians and scholars. I got to know both of them more than 20 years ago as they were colleagues of me, teaching in Lutherean Theological Seminary in Hong Kong. This book is one of the best of their studies, a product of joint efforts over many years, and I am so sure that it will become a very good guide for any who are interested in the development of Asian theology, taking the India experience as an example.
